Installing Eclipse to Ubuntu 13.10, 13.04, 12.04

Installing Eclipse Juno 4.2 in Ubuntu 12.04

First download the eclipse tar.gz package from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

1. Move the package to /opt/ folder.

# sudo mv eclipse-SDK-4.2.1-linux-gtk.tar.gz /opt/

2. Use the command line to extract the tar.gz package.

# cd /opt/
# sudo tar xzvf eclipse-SDK-4.2.1-linux-gtk.tar.gz

3.Create a desktop file and place it into /usr/share/applications

# sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/eclipse.desktop

Copy the following to the eclipse.desktop file

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Eclipse
Type=Application
Exec=/opt/eclipse/eclipse
Terminal=false
Icon=/opt/eclipse/icon.xpm
Comment=Integrated Development Environment
NoDisplay=false
Categories=Development;IDE
Name[en]=eclipse.desktop

4. Drag and Drop eclipse icon from /usr/share/applications/eclipse.desktop to your Dash Bar.

Very important for Ubuntu 13.10: you have to add the line below to the end of eclipe.desctop file.

Exec=env UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 /opt/eclipse/eclipse

In this case you will see the Eclipse’s menu.

  8. The issue that I’m having with this is that Eclipse apparently won’t run my java programs. They will compile OK, but I can’t run them from within the IDE. I’ve confirmed this by writing a simple program that should just pop open a window. It (as well as everything else) works when I run them from the command line, but not from within Eclipse.

    I’m trying to get this set up so that my son can learn Java. He wants to do some Android game development…

  9. Hey thanks a lot. But I have a problem. My eclipse only works when I actually manually open it from the opt folder. and the icon of the eclipse isn’t showing. It has a blank question mark ish kinda icon. please help. thanks

  31. Vivek Verma

    I followed the steps but in the end got this error :

    “There was an error launching the application”

    somebody suggest something…

  32. One little thing, the icon is not in /usr/share/applications. That is where eclipse.desktop is located.
    I guess we should copy icon eclipse.xpm from the /opt/ directory.
    I tried copying it onto the dash (which I guess is equivalent to task bar in Windows) but it won’t copy it there. Yup, I am linux user for last couple of hours only, so struggling 🙂

  33. hmmm, while I am able to open eclipse from /opt/ directory, I am still not able to open the menus in the title bar. They just show top level menus like File, Edit, … Help but they do not expand. So, I can not go to Help->Install Software for example to add Android SDK
